The main indicator for evaluating the quality of steel coil packaging is the binding force (locking force) of circumferential strapping and eye strapping. As the uncoiling capabilities of end users improve, the weight of finished coils becomes larger and larger, so the bundling force required for steel coil packaging is also increasing. Under the condition that the tensile strength of the straps is the same, the strapping force is determined by the strapping head. According to data, the maximum locking force of the lock-type pneumatic bundling heads commonly used in China is about 6000 to 8000N, and the maximum locking force of the fully automatic bundling heads used in developed countries is 17,000 ~ 20,000N. The locking force of the pneumatic strapping head is originally small and is also affected by factors such as air pressure and operation. Therefore, it is inevitable that the locking force of manual packaging straps will be insufficient, resulting in steel coil packaging that is not tightly strapped. Problems such as packaging damage and loose packaging of coils occur during the lifting process. This is the most important reason why the packaging quality of domestic steel coils is generally lower than that of foreign steel coils.

China’s steel coil packaging started relatively late. It has only been more than ten years since the first steel coil packaging unit introduced by Baosteel’s second phase project was put into use. Although China’s steel production has now ranked first in the world, exceeding 200 million tons per year, the proportion of cold-rolled thin plates, especially high-value-added high-quality plates (automobile plates, color plates, electrical steel plates, etc.), has always been relatively low. Most of the newly built cold-rolled sheet production lines will not be put into operation until the end of the “Tenth Five-Year Plan”, so the development of China’s steel coil packaging technology and equipment has been relatively slow in recent years. Among many steel companies, only a few steel coil packaging units are put into use. Among them: 2 imported units at Baosteel; 2 domestic units at Wuhan Iron and Steel’s silicon steel plant and 1 domestic unit at the cold rolling plant; and 1 imported unit at Anshan Iron and Steel’s new cold rolling plant. It is understood that there will be about 10 steel coil packaging units under construction. It can be seen that the current situation of steel coil packaging technology of Chinese steel companies is that the degree of mechanization is low and fully automatic bundling equipment all relies on imports.

The current standard for steel coil packaging of Chinese steel companies is “General Provisions for Inspection, Packaging, Marking and Quality Certificates of Steel Plates and Steel Strips” (GB/T247-1997). Since this standard is a “general provision”, there is no specific technical indicators mandatory. The lack of advanced technical standards is also one of the important reasons why China’s steel coil packaging technology is lagging behind.
